Our Story

It comes as no surprise that global warming and climate change are among the most discussed topics in recent times. There are already some sings of improvement, like decreasing prices for renewable energy, but there is much more work to be done. The Paris Agreement goas have set a clear target for many countries to do their part. However, the expectation is that in the coming years, more damage will be caused, and more lives will be lost due to climate change.Apart from climate change itself there are more alarming signals. Species are disappearing at alarming rates, forests no different, and air pollution is increasing. Because of these signals, global awareness of the issues is growing and slowly things are set in motion to minimize the effects. The fact is however, that much more efforts are required to really tackle the issue, and the private sector can play a big role in this by working on sustainable solutions, in close co-operation with government organizations.  This encouraged us to do our part and start a sustainable business of our own.

At Whataboutgreen thanks to our vast international network we are able to offer consumers a carefree solution to buy their sustainable products, offer corporations and the service industry a solution to make their daily operations more sustainable, and offer governments a practical platform to come closer to both individual consumers as corporations in order to translate their pro-environmental guidelines into actions that have a positive effect on the environment.

At Whataboutgreen we sell sustainable products, but what defines a sustainable product? For us, a sustainable product means a durable product produced in a sustainable way. Bamboo is one of our favourites. Bamboo grows relatively fast, lasts long and provides a perfect alternative to many single use (plastic) products. According to a recent report from the United Nations only nine percent of all plastics in the world has ever been recycled. The rest of it ends up in landfills, dumps or the environment. Bamboo on the other hand is durable and 100% biodegradable.

Sustainable to us also means produced under good working conditions and against fair wages for the workers in the factories of our suppliers. We exclusively work with suppliers that meet these requirements and have all the right certification in order like CE certification for Europe or FCC for the United States. We personally visit our suppliers regularly to ensure our own set standards are met. We also encourage large corporations and companies in the service industry, like hotel & restaurant chains with a high rate of single-use plastic usage, to join us in our mission towards a sustainable future. For more information on the possibilities for sustainable branding, please visit the Wholesale section of our webpage.

Of course, we do realize that to get our products to market we need transportation, which results into carbon emissions. Therefore, we carefully calculate the exact amount of CO2 emission per product, based on international standards. To compensate our emissions, we donate a fixed ten percent of our profit to planting trees. This results in our compensation being many times higher than our emission. We pride ourselves with having a negative carbon footprint on every product sold.

UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030

In 2015 the UN came up with a 15-year plan including 17 specific goals to ‘Transform Our World’. The Sustainable Development Goals are a call for action by all countries – poor, rich and middle-income – to promote prosperity while protecting the planet. They recognize that ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with strategies that build economic growth and address a range of social needs including education, health, social protection, and job opportunities, while tackling climate change and environmental protection.

At Whataboutgreen, we have used the SDG’s as guidelines and inspiration for the incorporation of our business. We mainly focus on number 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, 13: Climate Action, and 17: Partnerships for the Goals. For more information on these goals, and goal specific targets, please click on the goals on the left. As these goals are very general in a sense, we conveniently make use of the standards set by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) who have linked their standards to these specific goals. We look specifically at the ISO 14000 family of standards of Environmental Management.

Green Initiatives

WE PLANT TREES. Reforestation is our best chance in fighting climate change, therefore Whatabout green donates a fixed ten percent of their profits to planting trees. To do so, we are proud to partner with One Tree Planted.

One Tree Planted is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. As an environmental charity, it is their mission to make it simple for anyone to help the environment by planting trees. They work with reforestations partners in North America, South America, Asia, and Africa who help them get trees in the ground to restore forests after fires and floods, create jobs, build communities, and protect habitat for biodiversity.
